Dialysis Services Coming to Paris

Dialysis Services Coming to Paris

03/07/2018

Beginning later this year, area individuals who require dialysis services will not have to travel far to receive their treatments.

Fresenius Kidney Care, which operates dialysis centers throughout the country, will provide dialysis services on the Paris Community Hospital/Family Medical Center campus. The Paris dialysis center will be located inside a new rehabilitation services building being built on vacant land behind the hospital’s inpatient wing and current rehab facility. Fresenius Kidney Care will operate the service as an independent entity. Ground work for the project began in late February.

“There has been a need for dialysis services in our area for a long time,” said Oliver Smith, PCH/FMC president & CEO. “Our organization’s vision is to meet the ever-changing healthcare needs of our communities, which this service does. We are extremely pleased to finally offer these services to people in our communities who need them.”

The dialysis center is anticipated to open this fall. The space will consist of 7,000 square feet with eight dialysis stations. The remainder of the new rehab building – which will include physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and cardiac rehab – is expected to be completed in early 2019.

Raj Jeevan, MD, nephrologist, will serve as the dialysis center’s medical director. Dr. Jeevan, who practices in Terre Haute, has treated patients in Paris as a visiting specialist physician for many years.

The need for dialysis services in Paris has been consistently identified in the hospital’s Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA), as current dialysis patients must travel out of town for such services. A CHNA is done every three years (last performed in 2016) to determine and prioritize community health needs. The assessment includes input from focus groups comprised of area healthcare providers and partners, and persons who represent the broad interests of the community served by the hospital.

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved PCH/FMC’s certificate of need (CON) for construction of the dialysis center in March 2017.
