Gallbladder Solutions

Two Procedures, One Surgery

Our general surgeons perform a highly specialized, minimally invasive procedure called Laparoscopic Transcystic Common Bile Duct Exploration (LCBDE) for the removal of common bile duct stones. Cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) can be performed simultaneously, eliminating the need for a second procedure.

LCBDE advantages:

  • Shorter hospital stays & quicker recoveries than a two-stage surgical approach.
  • Higher success rate than Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for removing gallstones in the bile ducts.
  • Lower risk of post-procedural bleeding & pancreatitis, a significant complication of ERCP.
  • Preserves the natural function of the sphincter with a lower rate of long-term stone recurrence.
  • Preferred approach for patients with altered gastrointestinal anatomy (eg, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass).

The best candidates are patients who still have their gallbladder and present to the emergency department with elevated liver enzymes, without symptoms of ascending cholangitis. For these patients, LCBDE is the least invasive, safest, and most effective option for the treatment of common bile duct stones.
