Horizon Health Cardiology Welcomes New Provider

When it comes to patient care, cardiology holds a special place in the heart of Latia Summerville, family nurse practitioner.

Latia recently joined the Horizon Health cardiology team, supporting the practice of Dr. C. Tyson, who serves as medical director. The department provides full-service cardiology care, treating conditions such as atrial fibrillation, arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat), coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure (CHF), high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

“The way the heart and circulatory system works has always been a huge interest of mine,” Latia said. “It’s an amazing system. A cardiologist will tell you that the heart is king when it comes to the body.”

Latia has nine years of nursing experience, three of them as a nurse practitioner. She has worked in various healthcare settings in Illinois and Indiana, such as long-term care, adult intensive care unit, home health, and hospital medicine.

“Horizon Health has a good sense of community that I didn’t feel with other health systems,” she said. “It is a very welcoming environment.”

Cardiac imaging is another “plus” at Horizon Health, said Latia. Horizon Health has made substantial updates to its radiology services, which exceed industry standards with the most advanced imaging capabilities in the region. Cardiac image interpretation is performed by Innovation Health Services, a nationwide imaging practice comprised of highly trained cardiologists and radiologists.

To achieve the best possible outcomes, patients should be involved in their healthcare and advocate for what they believe is best for them, Latia said.

“Patients should be central to their care in terms of receiving education, understanding it, and asking questions,” she explained. “We’re a team. Let’s figure it out together.”

Latia has a master’s degree in nursing from Northern Illinois University, with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. She has a bachelor's degree in biology from Indiana State University.

Latia is a Terre Haute native who enjoys traveling and spending time with family, especially her six-month-old daughter who is the “joy of her life.”
