Horizon Health Welcomes Psychiatrist to Behavioral Health Team

Horizon Health welcomes a full-time psychiatrist to its team of behavioral health providers.

Qun Wu, MD, PhD, has been a psychiatrist for 16 years. He was a family medicine physician before becoming a psychiatrist, after graduating from medical school in 1982. He is board certified in both general psychiatry and child psychiatry. He treats patients age five to adult.

“Rural areas have less resources than urban communities,” Dr. Wu said. “A community hospital can help educate people about mental health care. Mental illness is real and should/could be treated.”

Dr. Wu diagnoses and treats a variety of behavioral conditions. He supports a team approach to care, working together with psychologists, social workers, and other mental health providers.

Dr. Wu is the latest addition to the Horizon Health behavioral health team. The team has grown over the past several months to include clinical psychologists, a licensed clinical social worker, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and Senior Care therapists.

“The addition of Dr. Wu is a major step forward in our effort to build a comprehensive behavioral health program,” said Ollie Smith, Horizon Health president & CEO. “His education and experience are very impressive, and we are fortunate to have him in our community.”

Dr. Wu provides comprehensive care for autism, ADHD, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, anger problems, and more. As a medical doctor, he can prescribe medicine when necessary.

Depression and anxiety are two of the most common conditions worldwide and often are genetic in nature, Dr. Wu said. One in four people will suffer chronic depression or anxiety in his or her lifetime.

“We can’t change genes, but we can treat these conditions with much success,” Dr. Wu explained.

Prior to Horizon Health, Dr. Wu worked as a psychiatrist in Terre Haute and at several hospitals and health centers throughout Indiana. He performed neurological research at several prominent medical schools in Chicago.

Dr. Wu earned his medical degree from Jiangxi College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He completed medical residency at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. He completed a fellowship in child psychiatry at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He earned a PhD in neurobiology from Illinois State University. He completed post-doctorate work in neurology at Rush University Medical Center, Northwestern University, and the University of Chicago.

Dr. Wu was born in a small Chinese town of 2,000 people. “I’m comfortable in a small town and see a need here for behavioral health services,” he said.

In his free time, Dr. Wu enjoys reading and fishing.
