Horizon Health, PCH Volunteers Launch Public Sharps Disposal Site

To improve community safety, Horizon Health and the Paris Community Hospital (PCH) Volunteers have placed a sharps disposal container on the main hospital campus to help prevent the improper disposal of used needles, syringes, and other biohazardous materials.

The drop box is in the Life Center building at 745 E. Court Street in Paris, which houses Horizon Health’s Senior Care program and the Human Resources Center of Clark and Edgar Counties (HRC).

The sharps container was donated by the PCH Volunteers. The project was led by Whitney Colvin, Horizon Health Housekeeping Manager, as part of an organizational leadership development program.

“Thank you to the PCH Volunteers and Whitney Colvin for making this project a reality,” said Jay Carmichael, Horizon Health President & CEO. “Free public access to sharps containers helps prevent disease, encourages safe disposal practices, and supports cleaner, safer communities.”

Community members may drop off accepted items at the sharps container 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Sharps containers don’t just protect needles—they protect people, staff, families, and the entire community from preventable harm,” Colvin said. “I’m happy to see this project come to fruition, improving environmental safety in our community while providing a safe and responsible way to dispose of sharps.”

Accepted Items

Sharps are biohazardous waste items that include needles, syringes, lancets, infusion sets, connection needles and sets, and auto-injectors, such as EpiPens, insulin pens, and GLP-1 medications.

The Paris Community Hospital Volunteers provide financial support for hospital projects — including annual healthcare scholarships — through hospital gift shop sales, chocolate sales, and other fundraising efforts.
