At Horizon Health, we understand that mental health challenges can arise at any time. If you or a loved one are experiencing a mental health crisis, it's important to know that you are not alone. The Human Resources Center of Edgar and Clark Counties (HRC) offers a variety of resources and services designed to provide immediate support and help navigate difficult moments.

What is a Mental Health Crisis?

A mental health crisis is a situation where someone experiences severe emotional or psychological distress that significantly impacts their ability to function or cope. During a crisis, individuals may be at risk of harming themselves or others.

Warning Signs of a Mental Health Crisis

While warning signs vary depending on the individual, some common indicators include:

  • Expressions of suicidal thoughts or intent
  • Threats of violence towards oneself or others
  • Extreme emotional states like uncontrollable rage or despair
  • Significant changes in behavior or personality
  • Withdrawal from social interaction or activities
  • Hallucinations or delusions

What is Mental Health Crisis Care?

Mental health crisis care encompasses a range of immediate support services designed to de-escalate a crisis situation and ensure the safety of the individual and those around them. Horizon Health's HRC offers the following resources for crisis intervention:

  • 24/7 Crisis Hotline: (217) 712-9766 Our crisis hotline provides immediate support and confidential counseling over the phone. Trained professionals are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to listen, offer guidance, and connect you with appropriate resources.
  • Living Room Program: The Living Room Program offers a safe and supportive environment for adults experiencing a mental health crisis. This voluntary program provides temporary respite care in a home-like setting, allowing individuals experiencing a crisis to stabilize and connect with ongoing support services. The Living Room Program is located in the Life Center on the Horizon Health campus (745 E. Court Street, Paris, Illinois) and accepts walk-ins 24/7.

What is a Psychiatric Emergency?

A psychiatric emergency involves severe mental health symptoms that require immediate intervention to ensure the safety of the individual or others. These situations may necessitate hospitalization or a higher level of care.

When to Seek Emergency Care

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis and there is a risk of immediate harm to themselves or others, please call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room.
